Gomez Road Dam decommissioning

We are decommissioning the Gomez Dam in Hikurangi. This involves removing the majority of the existing earth dam structure, which is no longer used for water supply purposes.

Announcement : Construction work for this project is on hold due to prolonged wet-weather conditions experienced over April and May 2026, and rainfall forecasts through winter. These conditions create difficulties for construction resulting in higher costs and increased safety risks. Works are scheduled to resume in September 2026 when drier weather is expected.

Hikurangi Repo environmental improvement

This aims to restore and protect the natural environment, support sustainable land use, strengthen hapū rangatiratanga and kaitiakitanga, and improve long-term flood management and climate resilience for the Hikurangi area and downstream communities.

Kamo Road bridge strengthening

Te Kamo carpark resurfacing and pedestrian improvements

The Te Kamo village carpark is scheduled for resurfacing as part of renewal works to repair existing pavement damage. Improvements will also be made to enhance pedestrian safety and the organisation of parking spaces.

Variable speed limits outside schools

Variable speed limits outside schools are changing in line with the Government’s Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024, which requires us to implement variable speed limits during 'school travel periods' outside all Whangārei District schools.

Waikaukau causeway repairs
