Airport Location Study

We have decided to investigate a site at Ruatangata, near Kōkopu Road, as a possible new airport location for our District.

This upgrade to John Street is proposed to be a high-amenity, one-way slow-street, connecting the city centre to the waterfront.

Kiripaka Road new footpath and wastewater dump station

This project will see a new, much needed pedestrian crossing point from the Tikipunga Sports Park shared path to Otuihau (Whangārei Falls), as well as the construction of a wastewater dump station on a new access loop from Kiripaka Road.

Kopipi Crescent new footpath

We will be constructing some new footpaths on Kopipi Crescent and Pine Road in Ngunguru, including new kerb and channelling, minor drainage and signage upgrades, new bollards and upgraded playground frontage and a new pedestrian-friendly connection to the Ngunguru Sports Complex.

Locky Dock secure bike parking

Free and secure bike parking is in Whangārei with 15 new Locky Dock bike-parking stations being installed around the city.

Mill Road safety improvements

We’re installing a new guardrail at the intersection of Mill Road, Waiatawa Road and Whareora Road to help keep vehicles safely on the road. The project also includes small changes to traffic lanes, road marking, kerbs, footpaths and traffic islands.

This project aims to significantly reduce flooding in the low-lying areas around Kaka Street.

The No 1 football pitch and training area at Morningside Sports Park is receiving a complete overhaul with new irrigation, drainage and sand carpet surface.

North Pātaua seawall

This project aims to prevent erosion, which is threatening the road shoulder of Aubrey Road in North Pātaua, and to provide a footpath that is separate from the road.

Ohawini Bay coastal projects

Two projects are included in these works. Taiwa Road ramp is a project to install a concrete ramp from the beach up to Taiwa Road to provide vehicle access to the properties on Taiwa Road. Waikaukau causeway is a project to repair the existing causeway to provide vehicle access to properties on Ohawini Bay.

Old Municipal Building (Town Hall) restoration

Real progress is being made on the restoration of Whangarei’s Old Municipal Building (OMB), which was badly damaged by fire in 2019.

Onerahi Road / Old Onerahi Road safety improvements

This safety project aims to improve the cycling connection to the Onerahi Shared Path and provides for general safety improvements at two road intersections in Onerahi to comply with current best practice and design standards.

Poroti trunk main renewal

We are replacing a section of a trunk main, which connects our freshwater catchment in Poroti to our Ruddles water treatment plant before branching off in several directions towards town.

Takahiwai (Pukekauri) Dam acquired lands

We are seeking to contact all people who have an interest in the many plots of land that were acquired in 1928 to form the Takahiwai Dam, to discuss future plans for the dam and the land.

Te Kamo carpark resurfacing and pedestrian improvements

The Te Kamo village carpark is scheduled for resurfacing in April 2026 as part of renewal works to repair existing pavement damage. Improvements will also be made to enhance pedestrian safety and the organisation of parking spaces.

We are increasing football field capacity for Whangārei with the development of a new artificial-turf football pitch with lighting at Tikipunga Sports Park.
