We are undertaking an essential safety replacement to the A H Reed swing bridge, located along the well‑used walking route near Whangārei Falls.

A recent engineering inspection identified structural deterioration to the swing bridge that requires a safety upgrade to the bridge design.

To ensure the safety of all walkway users, the bridge access will be closed while the replacement works are carried out.

Why this project is needed

The A H Reed to Whangārei Falls swing bridge is an important link within the local walking network.

Over time, natural wear, weathering and age have affected the condition of the timber support structures and associated components.

The inspection confirmed that maintenance and safety improvements are now required to ensure the replacement bridge will serve the community safely and reliably into the future.

What we are doing

We are working with specialist engineers and contractors to replace the bridge structure to ensure necessary stabilisation and safety improvements.

The new bridge structure will have improved stability and load requirements to ensure the bridge meets current safety expectations.

The bridge will remain closed until these activities are completed and the structure is certified as safe to reopen.

What this means for walkway users

  • A temporary detour is in place along the surrounding walkway network.
  • Signage at access points provides guidance for walkers.
