Water testing laboratory

Our laboratory offers water testing services to the public.

We test the quality and safety of water including:

  • private water supplies including bores, springs and rivers
  • swimming pool water
  • industrial waste
  • other specialised tests on request

Please contact us for advice before you collect a sample to make sure it is correct for the analysis required.

Our laboratory is accredited with International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) for a range of chemical and microbiological tests.

We also:

  • test Whangārei's public drinking water supply to make sure it meets the standards set by New Zealand's water services regulator Taumata Arowai
  • monitor the District's sewage discharges to ensure consent requirements are met.

COVID-19 testing

Whangarei's wastewater is regularly tested for COVID-19 to monitor the community spread of the virus. You can view the latest testing on the ESR website.

Some plumbing fittings allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours.

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.

We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.
