Ways of paying a council bill

We offer a number of ways for you to pay your Council bills.

To avoid penalties, please allow enough time before your payment is due.

Online payments will appear in the Whangārei District Council system the following business day. Online payments made after midnight, will take a further business day to appear.

Step 1.Have your card available

Pay using a credit or debit card (Visa and Mastercard only). We do not charge a fee for online credit card payments.

Step 2.You'll need our reference

The number appears on your invoice or notice depending on what you are paying.  Details on how to find the correct reference is available on the secure payment website.

Step 3.Pay online

Once you click on the "Accept and pay online" button you will be redirected to a secure payment website, where you can select what you want to pay (rates, infringements, dog registrations, applications or debtors).

You can then select the type of payment you wish to make from the left hand navigation and follow the instructions.

Direct debit

Direct debit is our preferred option for land and water rate payments.  You can also set up a direct debit to pay your debtors invoices and statements.

They can be set up to be paid from your bank account, on the following basis:

  • land rates - weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or annually.
  • water rates - weekly, fortnightly, monthly or when due
  • debtors - weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

If there are any changes to your land  and water rates charges, these will be automatically adjusted and notification sent to you in writing.

You can set up a Direct Debit online. You will need your bank account information.

You can arrange to pay your rates or water accounts by automatic payments from your bank account. The frequency and amount is your choice.

One automatic payment must be set up for each property or water account. If there is more than one property involved, several payments may be necessary.

Please be aware if you are paying rates or water accounts by automatic payment, then these rates must be paid in full by the due dates otherwise penalties will be incurred.

We do not monitor automatic payment amounts and we recommend that you review the amount and frequency when each installment notice or water account is received.

We prefer customers to use our Automatic Payment Forms to ensure the information provided is sufficient for payments to be credited to your account.
