We hold citizenship ceremonies throughout the year to welcome and acknowledge new New Zealand citizens. New Zealand citizenship is granted by the New Zealand government.

Whangarei District Council holds Citizenship Ceremonies roughly every two months; however, we do not have a fixed schedule or definite date for upcoming citizenship ceremonies.

We are sent lists of those due to receive citizenship by Department of Internal Affairs in advance of and then we send out official invitations. If you wish to enquire about the status of your Citizenship Application, please contact Department of Internal Affairs:

Citizenship ceremonies

Council citizenship ceremonies are hosted by the Mayor or the Deputy Mayor. We send ceremony invitations to people who have recently been granted citizenship and who live in Whangārei District.

A Māori welcome is followed by the Mayor’s speech.

Family and friends of the new citizens are also invited to attend.
