Summer safe carparks

SummerSafe carparks

The Summer Safe Carparks programme provides peace of mind to locals and visitors to some of our most popular summer hotspots.

The programme is coordinated by us under the CitySafe umbrella, and is supported by the New Zealand Police and by dedicated local community organisations.

About the programme

The programme runs over the summer period from the first weekend of the school holidays in December to Easter Monday.

The aim of the Summer Safe Carparks programme is to:

  • prevent theft from vehicles parked at popular tourist spots in the district
  • prevent anti-social behaviour during the summer months
  • create a positive experience for carpark visitors.

Volunteer ambassadors

The campaign is supported by dedicated volunteer ambassadors from the community who patrol carparks in their area, subject to Covid-19 restrictions on availability and safety requirements.

They wear high visibility CitySafe branded vests and offer friendly advice to make sure visitors to the carparks and their vehicles are safe. They also provide information about other local destinations to visit.

The ambassadors ensure the carparks are clean and report any vandalism or maintenance issues to Council and suspicious behaviour to the police. The police also patrol the parks as part of the campaign.

This programme has continually proven to be an invaluable contribution towards ensuring a safe district. Year after year while the programme is active and ambassadors are in their locations, there has been no vehicle crime committed.
