We're renewing a section of Pipiwai Road to improve the road surface, strengthen the pavement, improve drainage and support safer, more reliable travel for residential, commercial and heavy vehicle traffic.

The work will involve upgrading the existing road structure, improving drainage and making targeted improvements to support road users and the surrounding community.

What we're doing

The project includes drainage improvements, pavement strengthening, new chip seal surfacing, new kerb and channel, minor earthworks and additional car parking near the Kamo football hub.

  • preparing the road corridor, including clearing vegetation and topsoil where required
  • minor earthworks to create the required pavement width
  • drainage improvements, including subsoil drainage and culvert improvements where needed
  • new concrete kerb and channel
  • additional car parking near the Kamo football hub
  • pavement strengthening and stabilisation
  • new chip seal surfacing over much of the project area.

Under the rail overbridge, height restrictions mean the road cannot be built up with additional pavement material. The existing pavement will be removed and replaced with structural asphalt to provide the required strength while maintaining safe clearances.

The section between the Kamo / Pipiwai roundabout and Waipanga Road will also be reconstructed using structural asphalt because existing kerb and channel infrastructure limits an aggregate overlay, and the route needs to withstand heavy industrial vehicles.

Timing

Construction is planned from September 2026 to February 2027, subject to weather. Work will be staged to minimise disruption and maintain access through the area.

Stage 1

From approximately 76 Pipiwai Road to the rail overbridge:

  • planned to be completed before mid-December 2026
  • a sealed road surface will be provided before the Christmas holiday period.

Stage 2

From the rail overbridge to the Pipiwai Road / Kamo Road roundabout:

  • planned to begin in January 2027
  • expected completion in February 2027.

What to expect during construction

During construction, road users and nearby residents may notice:

  • temporary traffic management and reduced speeds
  • lane closures with manual traffic control or temporary traffic lights
  • occasional road closures with detours
  • temporary removal of some on-street parking
  • temporary restrictions to driveway access at times
  • changes to pedestrian access, with alternative routes provided where required
  • expect delays during the works, please use alternative routes if possible.

Properties directly affected by the works will be contacted in advance.
