You can lock a bike in public if it is out of the way – for example, locking a bike to a lamppost or to purpose-made bike parking.
For security, it's best to lock the frame and one wheel to a fixed structure, such as a bike-parking stand.
Your best option to protect your bike from theft is to register it with 529 Garage and use a strong, secure lock every time you park, or park your bike in a Locky Dock.
529 Garage is the world’s largest community-powered bike recovery service – and it’s free.
Download the 529 Garage app on your smartphone to register your bike now:
App Store (Apple) (apps.apple.com)
Google Play Store (Android) (play.google.com)
If you can't download the app, visit the website:

The right lock makes all the difference. A good bike is worth a good lock!
Free and secure bike parking is available at 10 Locky Dock bike-parking stations in some of the most popular destinations across the city:
Locky Docks make it easier for more people to cycle more often, and most of them can be accessed via our shared paths.
You can lock your bike using an app (download via Apple or Google Play stores) and by scanning the QR code.
You can also use your Bee Card (bus card) or another compatible card, or a Locky Dock card (available free from Whangārei Central Library).
These sites also include 240v outlets, so bring your own charger to charge your e-bike or mobility scooter for free.
Please wait while we load your map...
