Bike parking, charging and security

A young woman with long blond hair and wearing a cycle helmet places her bright blue bike into a Locky Dock parking station.

You can lock a bike in public if it is out of the way – for example, locking a bike to a lamppost or to purpose-made bike parking.

Bike security

For security, it's best to lock the frame and one wheel to a fixed structure, such as a bike-parking stand.

Your best option to protect your bike from theft is to register it with 529 Garage and use a strong, secure lock every time you park, or park your bike in a Locky Dock.

Register your bike with 529 Garage

529 Garage is the world’s largest community-powered bike recovery service – and it’s free.

Why you should register

  • Helps Police return your bike if it’s stolen.
  • Instant alerts to the local 529 Garage community if your bike goes missing.
  • Tamper-resistant shield available from bike shops and Whare Bike (community bike workshop) to deter thieves.
  • Check second-hand bikes before you buy – make sure they’re not stolen.

Choose a strong lock

The right lock makes all the difference. A good bike is worth a good lock!

  • Use a D-lock or hardened-steel chain.
  • Always lock through your bike frame and rear wheel to a solid object, like a proper bike stand.
  • Check the Sold Secure rating (Diamond, Gold, Silver, Bronze) when buying a lock.
  • Avoid flexible spiral cable locks – they’re too easy to cut.

Extra tips to keep your bike safe

  • Lock your bike in busy, well-lit places.
  • Take accessories like lights with you.
  • Consider replacing quick-releases on your wheels and seat with anti-theft versions – talk to your local bike store.
  • Even if it’s just a quick stop – lock it properly.
