Public notice: Broadleaf weed treatment

Whangārei District Council advises that broadleaf weed control treatments will be taking place at selected parks, reserves and playgrounds throughout September 2026.

Week beginning Monday 7 September 2026

Treatment of Onehunga weed and other broadleaf weeds is scheduled for:

• Bland Bay
• Whangaruru and Ōakura
• Helena Bay and Teal Bay
• Ngunguru and the Tūtūkākā Coast
• Pātaua North and Pātaua South.

Week beginning Monday 14 September 2026

Treatment is scheduled for:

• Pūtahi Park
• The Hātea Loop and Town Basin
• Reyburn House
• Art Park
• Hihiaua
• The Canopy Bridge
• Riverside parks and berms
• Destination Playground
• William Fraser Park
• Laurie Hall Park
• Cafler Park
• Hātea Carpark
• Elliot Reserve
• Pocket Park
• Bascule Park.

To minimise disruption to the public, treatment work in the Town Basin and CBD areas will be carried out during the evening where possible.

Please follow all signage and temporary notices placed at treatment sites and only enter areas when signage indicates it is safe to do so.

If you are visiting a treated area:

• Keep dogs on a lead and away from treatment areas.
• Supervise children and prevent them from entering areas where treatment is underway.
• Be aware that some treated areas may have a temporary fish-like smell. This comes from an additive used to help the treatment work more effectively and dry more quickly.

These treatments help maintain healthy, safe parks and reserves for everyone to enjoy throughout the summer months.

Weather conditions may affect the treatment schedule, and some work may be postponed if rain is forecast.
