We are upgrading and formalising the Park Avenue carpark at Kensington Sports Park to provide a safer, more accessible and better organised parking area.

The existing carpark is currently an unsealed gravel surface with no marked bays or dedicated accessible parking.

This project will deliver a fully sealed and line-marked carpark with clearly defined spaces, including accessible parking.

What we’re doing:

sealing and line-marking the carpark to improve safety and usability
removing the unused groundsman’s shed to increase overall parking capacity
introducing safe pedestrian routes through the carpark to improve visibility and reduce conflicts between vehicles and people
improving drainage and environmental controls to support long-term performance and sustainability.

Once complete, the upgraded carpark will better support the Whangārei Netball Centre and all users of Kensington Sports Park by delivering additional parking and safer, more convenient access for all visitors.

This upgrade will optimise how the space is used, improve the day-to-day experience for visitors, and create a more welcoming and functional environment for everyone who uses Kensington Sports Park.

Ōakura public meeting on Tuesday 31 March 2026

There will be a public meeting covering local land-slips, public facilities, wastewater, and ongoing local projects, to be held at the Ōakura Sports Complex (Wharua Road) on Tuesday 31 March. Doors will open at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start. All are welcome, especially Ōakura locals.

Hātea walkway swing bridge temporarily closed

The Hātea walkway swing bridge on the walking trail from A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park to Whangārei Falls is closed following a failed safety inspection. We are working with specialist engineers and contractors to replace the bridge structure to ensure necessary stabilisation and safety improvements.

Rates rebate widened

Changes to the thresholds mean some ratepayers who weren't eligible for a rates rebate in 2024-25 might be eligible in 2025-26. Homeowners can check their eligibility and apply for the 2025-26 rates rebate below. If you received a rebate last year, we have sent you a form for 2025-26, which you should have received by the end of July 2025.
