This project seeks to prevent erosion, which is threatening the road shoulder of Aubrey Road in Pataua North, and to provide a footpath that is separate from the road.
The footpath will extend from the end of the existing timber walkway coming off the pedestrian bridge to the end of the existing concrete footpath that leads to the Pataua North boat ramp.
It includes a rock revetment wall for bank stabilisation and a 1.5m concrete footpath with bridging elements where the footpath needs to navigate the roots of the adjacent pōhutukawa tree.
Due to the urgency of the intervention, which is required to prevent losing the road, the solution chosen is robust and easy to maintain / reinstate if damage occurs, with locally available material (rock).
There is also a strong community desire to incorporate a footpath, which means we have had to select a solution that can be installed at a relatively steep slope. In this way, a rock revetment wall meets the requirements for this site – it provides resilience, economy and visually it ties in the existing rock wall installed closer to the boat ramp.
The existing stairs down to the beach will be reused and reinstated when the seawall work is complete.
We intend to go to market mid-2026 and complete construction works before the end of 2026.
