Kotuitui Whitinga bridge temporary closure

Event date: Monday, 14 September 2026 | 06:00 AM to Monday, 21 September 2026 | 06:00 AM

Kotuitui Whitinga pedestrian and cycle bridge will be temporarily closed for repainting, which requires a a one-week-long marine and pedestrian closure.

Period of closure: 6:00am on Monday 14 September to 6:00am on Monday 21 September 2026.

This work is required to maintain the protective paint coating of the steel structure after 12 years of operation.

The painting work will be undertaken over a period of three months from early September to December 2026 with most of this work having no impact on marine traffic or pedestrians. However, during the set up of the scaffolding for this painting work, a one-week-long marine and pedestrian closure is required.

A signed detour route will be provided for pedestrians along Port Road and Herekino Street, then back onto the Hātea Loop Shared Path.

Skippers who are intending on travelling through the Kotuitui Whitinga bridge during this time are advised to plan ahead and carry out their trips either before or after this closure period. As always, skippers are encouraged to contact Bridge Control by phone or on VHF 18 for updates prior to setting off:

Phone: 021 040 1752 or 09 438 7261

There is no impact on the operation of Te Matau a Pohe bridge.

The bridge team would like to thank the public for their patience and support while we carry out this necessary work.

Another one-week closure will be required at the end of the painting work to remove the scaffolding and we will communicate this closure closer to the time.
