We are upgrading and relocating the existing zebra crossing outside Whau Valley School on Kamo Road.

The current crossing does not meet demand and safety levels.

It will be upgraded in response to requests from schools, the New Zealand Police and the community following several near misses.

New safety interventions include:

upgrading the existing zebra crossing to a more suitable signalised pedestrian crossing
new and renewed signage
minor changes to road markings
renewed footpaths
new traffic islands installed to better direct and manage traffic and provide for a safer crossing location.

Investigation and design started in late 2025.

The works will be tendered mid-2026 and are intended to start in the construction season from September 2026.

Hātea walkway swing bridge temporarily closed

The Hātea walkway swing bridge on the walking trail from A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park to Whangārei Falls is closed following a failed safety inspection. We are working with specialist engineers and contractors to replace the bridge structure to ensure necessary stabilisation and safety improvements.

Rates rebate widened

Changes to the thresholds mean some ratepayers who weren't eligible for a rates rebate in 2024-25 might be eligible in 2025-26. Homeowners can check their eligibility and apply for the 2025-26 rates rebate below. If you received a rebate last year, we have sent you a form for 2025-26, which you should have received by the end of July 2025.
