We’re expanding Maunu Cemetery to provide additional burial capacity for our growing community and ensure we continue to meet our legal obligations to provide burial plots into the future.
Located at approximately 6.5 kilometres west of Whangārei on Cemetery Road off State Highway 14, Maunu Cemetery is Whangārei's main cemetery and has served the community since 1892.
The current cemetery is nearing capacity, with available plots expected to be exhausted by late 2026 if no further development occurs.
This project will develop the next stage of the cemetery, creating around 1,000 additional burial plots and Northland's first dedicated pet cemetery area.
Expanding the cemetery will ensure there is sufficient space available for future generations while maintaining the high standard of amenity expected by the community.
