Otuihau Whangārei Falls is one of our District's most-visited natural attractions, recognised with TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards in 2024 and 2025.

This project will renew the three public viewing platforms at Boundary Road, Tikipunga, following structural assessments in 2022 and 2025 that identified the need for the replacement of some components.

The preferred approach will retain the existing foundations, which have an estimated 30 years of remaining life, while upgrading decking and balustrade materials to improve safety, extend asset longevity to approximately 30 years, and enhance the visitor experience.

A construction budget has been allocated in Year 2 of the current Long Term Plan (2025-26), with works to be procured through open tender.

Local hapū representatives from Ngāti Kahu o Torongare and Pehiāweri Marae will be involved in site blessings and cultural monitoring during construction.

Visitors may experience temporary disruptions or restricted access around parts of the site while construction is underway.

QV appointed as new rating valuation services provider

Hātea walkway swing bridge temporarily closed

The Hātea walkway swing bridge on the walking trail from A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park to Whangārei Falls is closed following a failed safety inspection. We are working with specialist engineers and contractors to replace the bridge structure to ensure necessary stabilisation and safety improvements.
