We are working with the Whangaruru community to deliver a combined sports park and wetland development at Ōakura.

The project will improve local recreation facilities, support community activities and enhance the natural environment, creating a space that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come.

Following detailed design work and site investigations, the project has been refined to focus on the facilities and environmental improvements that deliver the greatest benefit for the community while remaining within the available budget.

What we're building

The project includes:

  • a repositioned and upgraded sports field
  • sports field lighting
  • a multipurpose court
  • a new playground (funded through a community Lotteries Commission grant)
  • wetland restoration and planting
  • walking connections through the wetland
  • improvements to site access and parking
  • landscaping and associated earthworks.

Sports park improvements

The upgraded sports park will provide improved facilities for local sports, recreation and community events.

The sports field will be reoriented within the site to improve functionality and create a flexible space to meet the community's needs.

New field lighting will support extended use during the winter months and for evening training.

A new multipurpose court and playground will provide additional recreation opportunities for people of all ages, helping create a destination for the wider community.

Wetland enhancement

The wetland enhancement project will restore and strengthen the natural environment surrounding the sports park while supporting stormwater management across the site.

New planting and walking connections will improve access to the wetland and create opportunities for people to experience and learn about this important natural area.

The project will also improve biodiversity and support the long-term health of the wetland ecosystem.
