Sports park upgrades in time for winter sports
Published on 15 April 2026
A series of upgrades to sports fields across our District were successfully completed in time for the winter sports season, improving access and supporting increased participation for local communities.
Infrastructure Committee Chair Brad Flower says the completed investments responded directly to a long-identified shortage of quality sports fields across our District.
“In 2022, staff carried out supply and demand surveys that clearly highlighted the need to improve access to sports and recreation fields. This programme of work will ensure we can meet growing demand and community expectations.”
Improving access to sports fields was a key recommendation of our Active Recreation and Sport Strategy. Developed in partnership with Sport New Zealand and Sport Northland, these upgrades are one of the steps being taken to deliver on that strategy.
“Providing easy and convenient access to these facilities plays a vital role in supporting healthy kids and delivering significant wellbeing benefits for adults across our communities,” says Flower.
The upgrade to Morningside Sports Park was completed, focusing on the number one football pitch and training area. The works included new irrigation, improved drainage and a durable sand carpet surface, significantly enhancing year round usability and resilience.
LED lighting upgrades at Otangarei (Fishbone Park) and Onerahi sports parks were also completed, extending evening use and supporting growing demand. The new lighting now enables evening sports training at both locations.
We thank the contractors involved for their professionalism, skill and hard work in delivering the projects on time. We also extend a sincere thank you to the community for their patience and cooperation while the work was underway.
The completed improvements will benefit local sports clubs and residents for many years to come.
