Waters update - Ōakura
Published on 09 April 2026
Stormwater works
On Thursday 9 April 2026, our contractors will be on site attempting to fully unblock the damaged and blocked stormwater culvert that runs under Ōakura Road, including both ends of the culvert.
We currently have plans to replace this pipe before the end of April, subject to the necessary approvals and weather permitting.
It's possible that this pipe was damaged during the first significant weather event, and we know there is currently a lot of debris in the system.
In response to the ongoing storm events, we will be clearing stormwater beach outlets in Ōakura on a weekly basis for the time being to help reduce the risk of blockages.
We are also aware of water pooling issues affecting nearby properties. We commit to undertaking a catchment assessment to explore potential solutions, including the possible installation of an additional outlet south of the existing network.
Wastewater network
We are investigating options to relocate the damaged pump station control box (which contains telemetry, electrical equipment and controls) away from the slip area and to a higher location above the floodplain. This work is currently in the investigation phase, and we expect to have a confirmed location within the next six weeks, as from 9 April.
At a recent Ōakura community meeting, we were asked to increase monitoring of wastewater overflows. In response, we will ensure they are actively monitoring wastewater (particularly after extreme weather events), maintaining signage in affected areas, and notifying the appropriate authorities where required.
If residents are aware of wastewater overflows, please report these immediately to us.

How you can help
Residents can help reduce the risk of localised flooding by taking a few simple steps, if it is safe to do so:
- Keep an eye on the culverts in front of your property and clear away debris.
- Use a shovel to clear sand away from stormwater outlets onto the beach.
- Carefully lift the tidal flap and check whether the pipe appears clear.
If a pipe appears blocked and you’re unable to clear it safely, please contact us so our team can investigate.
If you notice signs that a septic tank may be failing, this should be reported to us immediately so it can be assessed and managed appropriately.
