Apply for a permit to install trade waste devices

Commercial, trade or industrial new-builds or alterations intending to discharge trade waste into the public wastewater network must acquire a Permit to Install Trade Waste Devices. 

This ensures the building or premises is fitted with devices suitable for the type and volume of Trade Waste it will discharge.

Once approved, the Trade Waste Officer will issue the applicant with a Permit to Install Trade Waste Devices letter (including approved plans). This letter must be included in the Building Consent Application.

Step 1.Gather supporting information

You'll need to provide the following information with your application.

  • As-Built plans (for existing drainage retained) and / or a sketch of the drainage layout (for new buildings or new drainage proposed)
  • any other supporting information you may have, e.g. manufacturer's manual for existing or proposed devices.

Step 2.Complete application

Download the application, print and complete it by hand.

Email your completed application and supporting information to:

Step 4.Assessment

We will check for any known capacity restrictions or issues and contact the applicant if more information is needed.

Step 5.Permit issued

If approved, we will send you a Permit to Install Trade Waste Devices letter which includes approved plans.

Attach your permit to install trade waste devices letter, including approved plans, to your building consent application.

Prior to opening the business, the business owner discharging trade waste will need to apply for a Trade Waste Consent (approval to start discharging trade waste).
