Parua Bay Skatepark – a true community effort

Whangārei's newest skatepark is now open at Parua Bay, following a dawn blessing on Wednesday 12 November 2025.

Local school children from Parua Bay Primary School helped choose the name, settling on 'Parua Bay Skatepark' as their favourite.

Infrastructure Committee Chair Brad Flower says the project is a great example of community collaboration.

"It's fantastic to see tamariki enjoying the park from dawn to dusk. This has been a marathon effort, and the result is a top-class facility that the whole community can be proud of."

The skatepark includes a relocated toilet block from Matapōuri and will soon be complemented by new footpaths and road crossings through Parua Bay village to improve safety.

Thanks to hapū representatives, parents, residents’ groups, contractors, designers and local supporters, this project has truly brought the community together.
