Kaiikanui Road is restricted to locals and anyone performing priority travel (for example contractors making repairs).
This restriction is in place because a slip at Helena Bay Hill has closed Russell Road.
From Monday 4 May 2026, we're trialling a new southern starting point for piloted convoys.
The convoys will now begin about 3.5km along Kaiikanui Road, rather than near Pigs Head Road, reducing the length of the managed area.
Thank you to locals for their patience while Russell Road is closed.
If you are a local travelling on Kaiikanui Road via Pigs Head Road or Webb Road:
Cyclists must load their bikes into the pilot vehicle and travel within the pilot vehicle. Riding through the controlled section is not permitted.
Anyone travelling to the east coast of the Whangārei District (between Helena Bay and the Whangaruru Peninsula) must use an alternative route.
The recommended route is:
This route is fully sealed and suitable for all vehicle types.
