Ohawini Bay coastal projects

  • Project typeTransport
  • Project value$300,000
  • Project scheduleSeptember to December 2026
Map showing the areas of works for the two projects.

Two projects are included in these works:

  • Taiwa Road ramp is a project to install a concrete ramp from the beach up to Taiwa Road to provide vehicle access to the properties on Taiwa Road.
  • Waikaukau causeway is a project to secure consent and repair the existing causeway, which accesses the bay further around in compliance with this consent, to provide vehicle access to properties on Ohawini Bay.

The goal of these projects is to provide consented coastal structures for vehicular traffic. Once these structures are constructed in compliance with the consent, we will be responsible for their ongoing maintenance.

The design for the Taiwa Road ramp incorporates large rock riprap (large stones used for erosion control) to stabilise the base of the structure, before a concrete running surface is placed on compacted layers, which will be traversable by vehicles allowing them to drive up off the beach and over the box culvert at the beginning of Taiwa Road. The budget for these works is $200,000.

The design for the Waikaukau causeway is primarily around repairing the existing structure where wear and tear can be seen, and stabilising the edge. The installation of a passing bay halfway around is being considered but will be budget and land dependent. The budget for these works is $100,000, with an additional $60,000 coming from the Maori Wellbeing Fund.

We are going to open market for procurement of these works. There will be a focus on the contractor’s ability to manage sensitive environmental considerations given we will be working in the coastal marine environment for both projects. The contractor’s ability to work efficiently within restricted working windows, due to the effects of the tide on the works zone, will also be assessed.

We plan to carry out these works between September and December 2026, and expect the works at Taiwa Road to take about three weeks, with another three weeks of work on the causeway.

Part of the funding for the causeway is being accessed through the Māori Wellbeing Fund, and we thank Te Huinga for their support in enabling this project to happen.
