Whangārei City Centre Plan

The Whangārei City Centre Plan is a shared strategic vision for our city centre and is structured around five key outcomes stating what we want our city centre to be.

The plan will:

inform future land use planning through our District Plan
identify future projects and outline where more detailed design thinking is required
present a common vision for our city centre, shared by our Council, the community, business owners, land owners and potential developers.

Hātea walkway swing bridge temporarily closed

The Hātea walkway swing bridge on the walking trail from A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park to Whangārei Falls is closed following a failed safety inspection. We are working with specialist engineers and contractors to replace the bridge structure to ensure necessary stabilisation and safety improvements.

Kotuitui Whitinga footbridge marine closure

Kotuitui Whitinga bridge will be closed to marine traffic from 9:00am to 3:30pm on Sunday 2 August 2026 due to a Northpower power outage.

Pedestrians can cross the bridge as usual. Te Matau a Pohe bridge operations are not affected by the outage.

Skippers are encouraged to contact Bridge Control for updates prior to setting off. We appreciate your patience while Northpower undertakes this work.
