Whangarei District Council has appointed Bruce Howse as its new Chief Executive.
Currently Group Manager Corporate Services and Deputy CEO at Northland Regional Council, Mr Howse brings extensive experience and strong local government knowledge to the role.
A seasoned local government leader with expertise in strategy, organisational performance and service delivery, Mr Howse has helped drive delivery across the regional council, supporting continuous improvement, innovation and sustainable outcomes for Northland.
Mayor Ken Couper says Mr Howse will provide stability and clear direction to the organisation for the time ahead.
“After a comprehensive recruitment process, it was clear that he had the strategic know-how and deep understanding of Northland local government to lead the organisation through this time of change.
“His decades of experience, considered approach and regional perspective will be a huge asset as we navigate reform processes and work towards strengthening local government structures in Northland.”
Mr Howse's appointment extends through to the 2028 local government elections, aligning with the period in which local government reform is expected to be considered and progressed.
With longstanding connections to the Whangārei District, Howse is looking forward to taking on the opportunities and challenges ahead as Council develops its next Long Term Plan and works through the transition of water and wastewater services to Northland Waters.
“The success, environmental wellbeing and resilience of Northland have been key focuses for me throughout my career, so I am excited by the opportunity to lead this organisation through what will be a pivotal period of change.
As a Northlander, I have a strong understanding of the priorities and pressures facing Whangārei residents and ratepayers. I'm committed to ensuring Council balances the needs of a growing District with the affordability challenges experienced by our community and businesses,” says Howse.
Mr Howse will start the role on Monday 9 November 2026.
