Whangarei District Council Chief Executive Simon Weston has announced he has decided to leave the organisation following an outstanding 30 years of service to Council and the community.

Mayor Ken Couper acknowledged Mr Weston's contribution to Whangārei over three decades.

"Simon has dedicated 30 years of his career to serving the people of Whangārei and his contribution to our District has been significant.

“When you look across Whangārei today, it's difficult to find a major project that hasn't been influenced in some way by Simon's leadership. That contribution represents a remarkable legacy.

“Simon leaves at a pivotal moment for local government, but he does so knowing the organisation is in a strong position. Through his experience and leadership, he has helped create a solid platform for the next Chief Executive and for the District's future success,” says Couper.

Mr Weston said the decision had not been easy but believed the timing was right.

“I’d like to acknowledge the mayors and councillors I’ve had the privilege of working alongside over the past 30 years. They carry a significant responsibility, making decisions that are not always easy or popular, in the best interests of their communities. In particular, I want to thank Mayor Couper and the current Council. With the scale of change taking place across local government, their role is more challenging than ever,” says Weston.

Mayor Couper thanked Mr Weston for the strong foundation he has built for Whangārei's future.

"On behalf of Council and our community, I would like to sincerely thank Simon for his remarkable service and contribution over such a long period.

"We wish Simon and his family all the very best for the future and thank him for the lasting contribution he has made to Whangārei."

Council will now begin the process of recruiting a new Chief Executive, with further information on interim leadership and recruitment arrangements to be announced in due course.

Mr Weston’s final day at Council will be 16 October 2026.
