Have you spotted some colourful new additions popping up around Whangārei?
Our latest Art on Boxes artworks have just been installed, transforming plain traffic-signal cabinets into bright pieces of public art inspired by our people, places and environment.
The programme gives local artists the chance to bring their creativity to our streets while helping celebrate the character of Whangārei.
However, Art on Boxes isn't just about making our neighbourhoods look good; it's also saving ratepayers money and helping brighten our streets while reducing graffiti.
Since the programme began in 2024, boxes featuring artwork have experienced less tagging, helping reduce the time and cost involved in removing graffiti.
The 2026 programme invited artists of all ages and experience levels, as well as schools and community groups, to submit original designs for 12 traffic-signal boxes from Kamo Road into the central city.
Next time you're out and about, keep an eye out for these mini outdoor galleries bringing a splash of colour to Whangārei!
