A sidewalk cafe sign on a wooden stand with colorful chalk lettering reading “LUNCH, DINNER, WEEKEND BRUNCH, HAPPY HOUR”. The sign is positioned next to blue ceramic pots containing green shrubs on a paved walkway.

We wanted to hear your views on a proposed new Signs Bylaw to replace our expiring Control of Advertising Signs Bylaw.

The proposed new bylaw sought to regulate the display of signs in public places and, in some cases, on private land for the purposes of protecting:

  • the public from nuisance
  • public safety
  • Council-controlled public places from misuse
  • the safety of Whangārei District’s road network.

It proposed to regulate:

  • portable signs in pedestrian areas to improve accessibility on our city’s footpaths
  • real estate signs
  • election signs
  • event signs
  • vehicle signs.
