Event date: Thursday, 10 September 2026 | 05:30 PM to 07:30 PM

Te Huinga hapū collective, supported by Whangarei District Council, warmly invites newcomers and our multicultural communities to a pōwhiri – a traditional Māori welcoming ceremony.

Being held as part of Welcoming Week (4 to 13 September 2026), this gathering is an opportunity to celebrate connection, inclusion and belonging in Whangārei.

Welcoming Week sits within the Welcoming Communities kaupapa, which brings councils, tangata whenua, community partners and residents together to make the places we love more welcoming for everyone.

The pōwhiri will provide an opportunity to experience a formal Māori welcome with tikanga (customs) and manaakitanga (hospitality) on Thursday 10 September 2026 at Terenga Paraoa Marae.

It will start at 5:30pm, followed by shared kai from 6:30pm. If you can, you are welcome to bring your favourite cultural meal to share.

Three logos: Whangarei District Council, Te Huinga and Welcoming Communities.
