Welcoming Week | Te Wiki o Manaaki

A graphic with colourful patterns and a map of New Zealand and the words

From 5 to 14 September 2025, we’re proud to celebrate Welcoming Week.

This annual event brings people together to honour the cultures, stories and contributions of newcomers in our communities, including migrants, former refugees, international students and anyone who has recently made this place home.

We invite you to embrace the spirit of whanaungatanga (building relationships) and manaakitanga (offering care and hospitality) in your own way.

Whether it’s a shared meal, getting to know your new neighbours or a simple act of kindness, every welcoming gesture helps create a more inclusive and connected community.

Welcoming Week is part of our commitment to Welcoming Communities, a programme that supports councils and communities to be more inclusive, friendly and open to diversity.

When we actively welcome and support newcomers, everyone benefits from the rich social, cultural and economic contributions they bring.

Check out the activations listed below to see how you can mark the occasion and help roll out the welcome mat.

Coming soon: The Welcome Table – a place for shared stories, laughter and cultural exchange

From Friday 5 September 2025, join our Whangārei Matters podcast with community organisations who are doing the core work in helping migrants, refugees and newcomers settle better in Whangārei.

Catch Nimo, Suzzette and Verena in a fun and engaging banter with the Welcoming Communities Coordinator.
