Preetha Koshy shares her story with us as part of a series celebrating the contributions of newcomers in our community for Welcoming Week (5 to 14 September 2025).

"We chose New Zealand for its natural beauty and better work-life balance. And this country has a strong need for healthcare workers, which made the migration process smooth for my family," says registered nurse Preetha Koshy.

"I'm originally from Kerala in South India, but I spent 15 years living and working in Saudi Arabia. I grew my family there and continued my career as a registered nurse. International experience in healthcare helped with migrating to Whangārei, New Zealand, where I've now lived for two years.

"The biggest challenge was adjusting to the slower pace here in Whangārei. Coming from fast-moving countries, it took time, especially for the kids, who missed malls and evening activities. Most things close by 5:30pm here, and that was an adjustment to our schedules. But now we enjoy more time together as a family.

"Healthcare work here is team based and fair. My experience in India and Saudi Arabia helps me stay calm under pressure. In dialysis, I've built strong relationships with returning patients.

"Outside of work, I've found community through my church and the Whangārei Malayalee Association. Acceptance, rooted in my culture, has shaped the way I connect with others here.

"Whangārei reminds me of home in many ways, and I find comfort in that. We see a future here, and one day hope to have a small farm, growing our own fruits, vegetables and cattle."

Nau mai, haere mai – welcome to Whangārei, Preetha.

Welcoming Week is an annual event that brings people together to honour the cultures, stories and contributions of newcomers in our communities, including migrants, former refugees, international students and anyone who has recently made this place home.
