This joint project between our Roading and Wastewater teams added a new, much-needed pedestrian crossing point from the Tikipunga Sports Park shared path to Otuihau (Whangārei Falls), as well as the construction of a wastewater dump station on a new access loop from Kiripaka Road.

This dump station replaced the previous caravan dump station at Te Maika Road in Ngunguru (opposite Ngunguru Primary School), where the site was deemed no longer suitable.

The site was also designed for future implementation of a water refill station for commercial and rural users.

The project included work to provide for:

  • new and renewed footpaths providing improved pedestrian connectivity and crossing points with new tactile ground-surface indicators for visually impaired pedestrians to meet New Zealand standards
  • the installation of new pedestrian refuge islands to provide clear crossing points for pedestrians and to slow vehicles on side roads
  • new kerb and channel, and improved drainage
  • new lighting to comply with current best practice and design standards
  • new signage and road markings to better delineate parking in the area (which can be a problem in winter months)
  • a new caravan dump station with two separate bays for joint use.
