Field upgrades to boost sports ground access
Published on 12 November 2025
Work is underway on the Onerahi sports field drainage upgrades.
We are delivering a series of upgrades to sports fields, aimed at improving access and participation for local communities.
Infrastructure Committee Chair Brad Flower says these investments are in response to the shortage of quality sports fields across the District.
"Staff conducted supply and demand surveys in 2022, which highlighted the need to increase access to fields for sports and recreation. The team is now delivering a programme of work to ensure that we have the capacity to meet growing demand and community expectations."
Improved access to sports fields was a recommendation in Council's Active Recreation and Sport Strategy, developed in partnership with Sport New Zealand and Sport Northland.
"Providing easy and convenient access to these facilities is an important contributor to raising healthy kids and has huge benefits for adult wellbeing," says Flower.
Morningside Sports Park upgrade
An upgrade to Morningside Sports Park has just got underway, targeting the number one football pitch and training area.
Scheduled for completion by March 2026, the works include new irrigation, improved drainage, and a sand-carpet surface to enhance durability and year-round usability.
During construction, the northern field area will be closed and fenced off for safety. Access to Morningside School, the number two football field and the playground will remain open throughout the works.
Otangarei and Onerahi sports field lighting upgrades
To extend evening access and support growing demand, Council is installing LED lighting at Otangarei (Fishbone Park) and Onerahi sports parks.
The LED lights will support rugby training at Otangarei and Onerahi, and multi-sport use and community events at Onerahi.
The lighting upgrades are expected to be completed early next year.
Better drainage on the way
To improve field performance during wet seasons, secondary drainage systems are being installed at:
- Parua Bay (Anderson Park)
- Portland Recreation Reserve
- Hūkerenui Domain
- Otangarei Sports Park (Fishbone Park)
- Ngunguru Sports Park.
These upgrades will reduce field closures, improve turf health, and ensure safer, more consistent playing conditions – especially during winter.
All works should be completed ready for the start of the winter sports season.
