Whangārei’s brand-new Rose Street bus hub opened on Friday 8 August 2025, and CityLink buses and their passengers have been arriving and departing since Monday morning.

The new terminal is a modern, safe and more comfortable space, says project manager Nick Coleman.

It features covered seating and upgraded shelters, safer crossings and pedestrian access, and more space to allow the buses to move more smoothly through the area.

Funded through Waka Kotahi’s Transport Choices Package, the project has been completed in two stages.

In 2022, the roading was redesigned and a new bus lane, new shelters and a raised pedestrian crossing on Bank Street were added, and new lanes were marked.

This year, buses have been arriving and departing from Vine Street while the old buildings were demolished and replaced with new public toilets, staff facilities, a ticketing office and the covered seating area.

A new pedestrian link has also been added between Rose and Vine streets to provide a safer pedestrian connection into the city centre.

Mr Coleman said Waka Kotahi’s Transport Choices programme supports Council projects that help to improve the environment by reducing the number of kilometres people travel in individual vehicles.

Investing in walking, cycling and public transport systems reduces the load on the environment, helps provide social connections and improves public health.

Our role is to provide the infrastructure for the bus service, which is run by Northland Regional Council.
