The future of Raumanga and Otaika

We're working on a plan to enhance the Raumanga and Otaika areas over the next 30 years.

This plan will help guide changes, like improving parks, making streets safer and having more local shops.

In our 2024 survey, we asked what matters most to you and you told us you care about:

  • parks and reserves
  • getting around easily
  • being close to whānau
  • local shops
  • feeling safe.

In this 2025 survey, we wanted to know how we could make these things even better.

  • What would you like to see in your local parks?
  • What would make it easier to get around?
  • What would help you feel safer?
  • What shops would you like nearby?

Discussions

The Raumanga and Otaika Placemaking Plan – Te Whakakaupapa Whaitua mō Raumanga me Otaika will become a roadmap for change and development in the area over the next 30 years.  

The community feedback collected through engagement will inform the plan and set the direction for future Council work in the area.

There are three main steps to develop this plan:  

  • Setting goals – What does the community want for Raumanga and Otaika? That's what our first survey was about (November 2024 to January 2025). 
  • Focus areas and objectives – Now that we know our goals, we talked with you again about how to achieve them (17 November to 17 December 2025).
  • Feedback on the draft plan – When the placemaking plan is nearly ready, we'll get your input one last time (to be confirmed).

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond and provide feedback. 

Raumanga and Otaika are the southern gateway to urban Whangārei and home to over 6,000 people.   

The median age is 30 years old and 25 per cent of the population are under 15 years old.  

The most common ethnicity is Māori (over 60 per cent) and nearly 20 per cent of the population is fluent in both te reo Māori and English.   

Approximately 12 per cent of the population has a form of disability.  

There are more than 1,600 private dwellings in the area with an average of three bedrooms.  

The collection and use of personal information by Whangarei District Council is regulated by the Privacy Act 2020.
