Re:Sort is owned and operated by a joint venture company, Northland Regional Landfill Limited Partnership. We do not set the charges for it.

Free recycling drop-off:

Glass: clean, unbroken glass bottles and jars - with lids removed (metal lids can go into metal recycling).

Note: window glass, light bulbs, crystal, ceramics/pottery, drinking glasses, or broken glass is not suitable for recycling and should be disposed of as general waste.

Paper and cardboard: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, flattened cardboard boxes, shoe boxes, cartons, old phone books.

E-waste: We dispose of e-waste but there is a separate charge for each item.

What waste is not accepted here?

Hazardous waste: We do not accept hazardous waste like paint, chemicals, sprays and poisons, batteries and gas cylinders. There is a free monthly hazardous waste collection at Re:Sort.

Waste oil: Waste oil can be dropped off for free in domestic quantities (i.e. a maximum of 20 litres at a time) at Re:Sort. The waste oil drop-off point is next to the recycling wall.

Vegetation and plant clippings

Vegetation is charged at a lower rate than household rubbish. We accept loose green waste and vegetation (not in bags or boxes). Tree prunings must be less than 10cm in diameter or they are too big for our shredders.

The waste is processed through a shredder which means some plant materials, as well as branches greater than 100mm diameter, must be disposed of as general rubbish not as vegetation.

Green waste containing other items such as stones, concrete, plastic, weed killers or noxious weeds is also not accepted.

Unacceptable plants include:

  • ponga trees
  • agapanthus
  • flax
  • bamboo
  • ginger plant
  • gorse cuttings
  • cabbage trees
  • Norfolk pines.

Household hazardous waste disposal (nrc.govt.nz) 

The collection days are for domestic hazardous waste, in household quantities only (up to a maximum container size of 20 litres).

Businesses can contact Northland Regional Council to find out about options for the disposal or treatment of their hazardous waste. Alternatively, they can bring their hazardous waste to the collection days and will be on-charged for the disposal costs.

What products are classed as hazardous?

A product is considered hazardous, and must be disposed of as such, if it is:

  • flammable
  • toxic
  • explosive
  • corrosive
  • radioactive.

Hazardous products commonly found in the home include:

  • paint
  • pool chemicals
  • disinfectants
  • drain cleaners
  • gas cylinders
  • batteries
  • acids
  • garden sprays and
  • insect baits.
