Wadang Roof Tile Making workshop

Book in for this workshop, held in celebration of Chinese New Year, to learn how to create a Wadang roof tile. This workshop will be taught by Chinese New Zealand Artist Lalita Li, following on from her time spent in the Pingyao Shanxi Provence in 2025 studying roof tile ceramics.

Beneath the eaves of ancient Chinese buildings lies a small round tile that carries a thousand years of beauty - it's called Wadang.

In this workshop, Lalita will share her research and a history of the Wadang tile making, and make the round base of the Wadang in the morning.

Then in the afternoon attendees will focus on hand-building the Lion embossed surface design, a traditional symbol of protection for the house and the owner.

Currently living in Henderson, Auckland. Lalita's art practice spans attaining her Bachelor's degree from Minzu University of China in 2005, to her Post graduate studies at Elam School of Fine Arts in 2017.

Lalita established her own Auckland ceramic studio in 2018 where she teaches wheel-throwing and hand-building classes.
