Sand replenishment works are scheduled to begin on the southern side of the Pataua South estuary from Monday 25 May 2026.

Sand replenishment (also known as beach nourishment) involves placing sand or sediment onto a beach to reduce erosion, increase beach width and help protect coastal assets from storm impacts.

This approach is considered a ‘soft engineering’ solution, as the added sand creates a natural buffer that absorbs wave energy and supports the ongoing function of the coastal environment.

What works are being undertaken?

The planned works will include:

  • beach replenishment
  • dredging in approved areas
  • minor maintenance of the timber groynes
  • other associated maintenance activities.

All works will be carried out in accordance with the approved resource consent and design plans.

Why are these works needed?

These activities are part of ongoing coastal management to:

  • maintain beach levels and improve natural sediment movement
  • support the effectiveness and longevity of the existing timber groynes
  • help reduce erosion and improve the resilience of the estuary shoreline.

Together, these measures help protect the coastal environment while maintaining its recreational and ecological value.

What this means for the community

Beach users can expect temporary disruptions, including machinery operating on the beach and restricted access to parts of the work area during active works.

Please follow all site signage and instructions from contractors to ensure safety.

Efforts will be made to minimise disruption where possible.

Normal beach access will resume once works are completed.

Monitoring and environmental protection

All works will be undertaken in full compliance with the approved consent conditions.

Monitoring will be undertaken both during and after the works to ensure outcomes are in line with consent requirements and environmental expectations.

All activities will be carried out with appropriate measures in place to avoid or minimise impacts on sensitive habitats.

This project is undertaken in collaboration with Haukāinga and Pūkahakaha East 5B Trust.
