Whangārei Intermediate students contribute to Knowledge Precinct Plan
Published on 27 May 2025
Students from Whangārei Intermediate have been helping to shape our Knowledge Precinct Plan.
The Knowledge Precinct Plan is a chance to transform the part of the city around Forum North into a vibrant hub for events, culture and tertiary education.
Urban Designer Lucy Edwards gave the students an introduction to Council strategic planning, followed by an engaging game of Monopoly, featuring locations within the Knowledge Precinct area.
The students shared lots of creative and innovative ideas about changes and additions they'd like to see in this area. Their priorities included more activities for kids their age, such as more play equipment like slides in Cafler Park, food trucks selling international cuisine, a dedicated space in the library for intermediate kids, and go-karts in the Forum North carpark when shows aren't taking place.
One of the Monopoly squares prompted students to imagine themselves as Mayor for a day. Among the suggestions were some new ideas for housing and creating more skateparks.
The students also talked about community safety and the importance of being able to get around town on their own.
The Knowledge Precinct Plan survey closed at 4:00pm on Friday 30 May 2025.
