Morningside flood relief stage 1 completion

The walkway from Porowini Avenue to Rawhiti Street has reopened with some smart new features: two powerful pumps that remove stormwater from the low-lying areas of Morningside (like Kaka Street) and help it drain to Limeburners Creek.

It's a central part of the Morningside flood-relief project, which significantly increases the drainage capacity for the southern side of the suburb.

The landscape naturally has a large hill as well as low-lying areas, a perfect recipe for flooding issues after heavy rain.

Stage 1 of that project is now complete and stage 2 is underway.

Stage 2 is related to the huge covered openings (shown in the photo above) – through a 'stormwater interceptor' pipe they will deliver water directly from higher parts of the Morningside catchment, avoiding the flood-prone areas entirely.

We're proud to deliver this work with majority funding from the Government's Crown Infrastructure Fund.

It is scheduled to be completed in November 2025.
