Simon Weston, Chief Executive of Whangarei District Council, is encouraging anyone thinking of running for Council to come along to the Candidates Information Evening from 5:00pm to 7:30pm on Wednesday 4 June 2025 at Te Iwitahi (civic centre), 9 Rust Avenue or via livestream.

"If you're considering running for our local elections, it's important you have insight into what you're signing up for," says Mr Weston.
"Standing for Council is an exciting opportunity. It's a chance to give back to your community and, in some ways, to help build a nation. It does require you to bend in the wind, to be pragmatic and be able to work through (at times) challenging issues. You'll need to find solutions that aren't immediately obvious.
"To flourish as an elected member, you will be a team player, have an open mind, be adaptable, pragmatic and have great listening skills. You will be able to process a lot of detailed information and have a good degree of endurance and resilience. Most importantly, you will enjoy representing – and working with – a diverse array of people.
"Being an elected member is both the most rewarding and the most challenging role you're ever likely to have. It involves a significant amount of work, however it can be extremely fulfilling."
If you're ready to take it to the next level, join us at the Candidates Information Evening.
