Kaiikanui Road repairs get underway
Published on 03 November 2026
Kaiikanui Road became a lifeline for the Whangaruru coastal community this year, carrying tens of thousands of vehicles while Russell Road was closed by the major Helena Bay Hill slip.
Now, with Russell Road back in action, it is Kaiikanui Road’s turn for some attention.
Kaiikanui Road temporary road closure
From February until the end of September 2026, more than 50,000 vehicle movements were recorded on Kaiikanui Road during piloted hours alone. When traffic outside those hours is included, we estimate the road carried more than 67,000 vehicle movements during the closure period. Average daily traffic was around 230 to 250 vehicles.
For months, the narrow rural road provided an important connection while the major slip on Russell Road was repaired. Piloted convoys operated from 6:30am to 6:30pm seven days a week, helping keep people moving through the area.
However, that extra traffic took its toll. We carried out maintenance while the detour was operating, including grading and pothole repairs, but more substantial rehabilitation was deliberately planned for once Russell Road had reopened.
That larger programme of maintenance and rehabilitation work is now getting underway.
The November 2026 programme includes 31 culvert replacements, around 15km of water-tabling, drainage maintenance and improvements, vegetation management and pavement repairs, culminating in an unsealed road rehabilitation to provide a renewed unsealed surface.
The wider programme will also include drilling to investigate a slip below Kaiikanui Road that formed during the January 2026 storm. This will help us understand the ground conditions and work out options for permanent repair.
In short, after Kaiikanui Road held strong when it was needed most, the focus is now on looking after the road itself.
We know these works will mean another period of disruption for people living along Kaiikanui Road, and we thank residents for their continued patience while we carry out this work.
Road closures and detour (with resident access)
To complete the work safely, sections of Kaiikanui Road will need to close while crews and machinery are working (weather permitting).
- Period of closure: Monday 9 November 2026, 8:00am to 5:00pm; and Thursday 12 November to Friday 11 December 2026, 8:00am to 5:00pm weekdays
- Access: Resident access only. People needing to pass through the work area may experience delays of around 20 to 30 minutes or longer while machinery is moved safely out of the way.
- Detour: Via Russell Road.
Full road closure (no resident access)
A full road closure will be in place outside approximately 543 Kaiikanui Road to enable geotechnical drilling investigations.
- Period of closure: Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 November 2026, 8:00am to 5:00pm
- Access: No vehicle access through the closure point, including residents.
- Detour: Via Russell Road.
