As part of the Governments' Road to Zero National Road Safety Strategy, we are required to review speed limits in the Whangārei District.

We are doing this in a staged process, focusing on areas where the evidence indicates that changing the speed limit will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal and serious harm crashes and improving overall road safety.

Whangārei Heads speed limit review

We reviewed speed limits in the Whangārei Heads Catchment.

The review area included the Whangārei Heads Road, Parua Bay and all settlements along the northern edge of the Whangārei Harbour.

The catchment extends north to the Whangārei – Ngunguru Road but does not include that road (Whangārei - Ngunguru Road will be reviewed as part of the Tutukākā Coast Review).

This review also included the following coastal settlements:

  • Pātaua North
  • Pātaua South
  • Taiharuru
  • Oceans Beach.

As part of the review, we sought community feedback on the Proposed Speed Limits before we make any final decisions.

We have completed a review of speed limits in the Whangārei Heads area and are implementing the new speed limits in a multi-staged process:

Stage one

The first stage came into force on 15 December 2023 for the Whangārei Heads catchment, including:

  • Whangārei Heads Road
  • Waikaraka

  • and side roads.

A list of roads and the new speed limits can be viewed in the public notice:

Stage two

The second stage includes the remainder of Whangārei Heads Road between Parua Bay and Ocean Beach.
