A rates remission is a partial reduction in the amount of rates you have to pay.  You may be eligible for rates remission if your property meets certain criteria.

The objective of our Rates Remissions and Postponement Policy is to ensure the fair and equitable collection of rates from all sectors of the community by:

  • providing financial assistance and support to ratepayers
  • addressing any rating anomalies and enabling economic development
  • ensuring the environment is protected
  • recognising the particularities of ownership, inaccessibility and other factors specific to Māori freehold land.

The Rates Remissions and Postponement Policy provides information on the rates remissions available to ratepayers, the objective and the criteria and conditions for each remission type.

Apply for a rates remission and postponement

There are different types of rates remissions and postponements available.

To apply for a remission:

  • make sure you use the correct application form. You need to complete a separate form for each type of remission.
  • you must be the ratepayer for the property, or an authorised agent acting on the ratepayer's behalf.
  • you must apply before the new rating year beings on 1 July.

If your application is approved and you apply during the current rating year, the remission will start from 1 July of the next rating year.  It cannot be applied straight away.  Remissions cannot be applied to previous rating years.

More information about each type of remission, including who can apply and how to apply, is available on the pages below.
