Light Up Hikurangi – Matariki Festival

The people of Hikurangi will be lighting up our Village and hosting an epic Matariki Festival!

With lots of kaihaukai (feasting), indoor and outdoor markets, live performances, art displays, free rides for kids and storytime shared by our kaumatua.

Our local shops will join in the celebration by staying open late and the whole village will welcome the new year with a community waiata at 5pm.

At Matariki the village of Hikurangi lights up and welcomes everyone to share this special time together.

The Friendship House will provide mobility parking support, drop-off zones and seating for kaumatua.

Hātea walkway swing bridge temporarily closed

The Hātea walkway swing bridge on the walking trail from A H Reed Memorial Kauri Park to Whangārei Falls is closed following a failed safety inspection. We are working with specialist engineers and contractors to replace the bridge structure to ensure necessary stabilisation and safety improvements.

Kotuitui Whitinga footbridge marine closure

Kotuitui Whitinga bridge will be closed to marine traffic from 9:00am to 3:30pm on Sunday 2 August 2026 due to a Northpower power outage.

Pedestrians can cross the bridge as usual. Te Matau a Pohe bridge operations are not affected by the outage.

Skippers are encouraged to contact Bridge Control for updates prior to setting off. We appreciate your patience while Northpower undertakes this work.
