Governance Training Programme for Community Organisations

Are you a member of a trust, board or community organisation in Te Tai Tokerau?
Do you want to strengthen your governance capability?
Join us for this free, two-part online governance training programme to help build your confidence, develop a positive board culture, and enhance mission achievement and long-term sustainability.
By the end of the training programme, participants will be able to:
- describe the key roles and responsibilities of a not-for-profit board and its members
- apply principles of effective governance to decision-making in their organisation
- identify practical strategies to improve board processes and meetings
- strengthen their understanding of the relationship between governance, management and operations
- explore ways to create and sustain a positive board culture.
These free workshops are hosted by LEAD, the Centre for Not-for-Profit Governance and Leadership, and organised by Whangarei District Council in partnership with Kaipara District Council and Far North District Council.

Session 1: Effective Governance Foundations
Monday 1 December 2025, 12:00pm-1:30pm | Online / virtual workshop | Free
The first session will cover:
- understanding governance vs management in not-for-profits
- core roles and legal responsibilities of boards in New Zealand
- effective meetings – agendas, decision-making and accountability
- building collective responsibility and shared leadership
- Māori models of governance.
Session 2: Positive Board Culture
Monday 8 December 2025, 12:00pm-1:00pm | Online / virtual workshop | Free
The second session will cover:
- what makes a healthy board culture
- board dynamics – trust, collaboration and managing conflict
- chairing skills and supporting constructive participation
- embedding values and mission into governance practice.
Additional learning
You will be provided access and use of online governance resources and activities to continue learning beyond the workshops.
