Cultural Competency In-Person Workshop
Event date: Tuesday, 17 February 2026 | 09:00 AM
to 04:00 PM
Do you work for a community group or non-profit organisation in the Whangārei District?
Are you wanting to increase your knowledge of practising tikanga Māori and build on your cultural capability?
Join us for our full-day Cultural Competency In-Person Workshop (morning tea and lunch are included).
This full-day workshop will look at the following:
- Assessing cultural capability in community contexts – How to reflect on and assess the cultural safety and responsiveness of their own community or grassroots organisations. We’ll explore accessible strategies that are strengths-based and grounded in te ao Māori values.
- Best practice for working with Māori in community settings – This wānanga explores what ‘best practice’ looks like when working with Māori in not-for-profit and community contexts. We’ll look at real-world examples, and practical strategies to think about when engaging with Māori internally and externally that uplift mana, build trust and create sustainable relationships.
- Understanding and practising tikanga Māori – A session that introduces key concepts of tikanga Māori in everyday kaupapa, such as karakia, hui, hosting, decision-making, and care for people. This kōrero will offer guidance on how to approach tikanga respectfully, confidently and in a way that’s authentic to each rōpū.
- Pepeha, mihimihi and engaging meaningfully with Māori – A supportive space for participants to understand and develop their pepeha and mihimihi, and to build confidence in their use. We’ll also cover how these elements sit within broader engagement practices that honour mana whenua, whakapapa, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga.
This event is facilitated by Rikki Consultancy and subsidised by Whangārei District Council. Limited spaces available.
We are also offering this course in a four-part online workshop in March 2026:
