Port Road - Kioreroa Road improvements: Stage Two

  • Project value$6m
  • Contractor nameUnited Civil Construction
  • Completion Date31 December 2023
Construction of the roundabout at Port Road and Kioreroa Road with cars in the background.

We are building a new roundabout at the intersection of Port Road and Kioreroa Road.

The roundabout will improve traffic flow at this busy intersection that carries about 20,000 vehicles a day. It will also make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The roundabout is Stage Two of a $16 million project. The work is being completed in stages to minimise disruption for drivers.

Since January 2023, two lanes on the river side of the new roundabout have been constructed on part of former Ballance Fertiliser works site.

From Tuesday 22 August 2023 those two lanes will be sealed, then traffic will be moved onto them while the inland side of the roundabout is completed.

Some of the new road will be covered in a temporary seal to allow traffic to use it before it can be rebuilt in summer when the weather is dry enough to let the new road surface dry out correctly.

We will also be replacing the railway crossing as part of this work and some weekend road closures will be needed to carry this out.

Subject to good weather the new roundabout should open at the end of 2023.

Stage 1: Port Road Bridge widening (complete)

In 2022 a $10m the Port Road Bridge across Hāhā Creek / Limeburners Creek was expanded to four lanes with a shared path. This was Stage One of a two-stage project designed to improve traffic flow through this busy area.

The work was funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) as part of the government’s "shovel ready" Covid-19 stimulus funding. As part of this funding agreement, we targeted more than 60% of the work to be undertaken by local companies and are encouraging supplier diversity.

The new bridge is higher than the old bridge to protect it against sea-level rise and flooding due to storm events.
