A street view of Whangarei Heads Road in Parua Bay.

This project aims to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety in the Parua Bay business community on Whangarei Heads Road between Lamb Road and Kiteone Road.

After consultation with the school and following community queries regarding safety, concept drawings have been generated showing several improvements including:

  • new improved pedestrian crossing points
  • improved footpath connectivity including new footpaths
  • new kerb and channel and drainage
  • improved road line marking
  • signage
  • new road lighting.

Community engagement and updates

A drop-in session was held on 7 May 2025 at the Parua Bay Community Hall, where members of the community met with Council staff to discuss the project concept design and provide input.

The drop-in session indicated that, with the reversal of speed limits outside the school and through the village area, the community would like to see measures introduced to reduce vehicle speeds through the Parua Bay village.

Design drawings are currently running through final revisions, and the works will be tendered to the open market with a package of safety improvements over the coming months.

Works are likely to be undertaken over the end-of-year school holiday period to reduce disruption and to minimise the risk to schoolchildren being around construction zones.

While we have not been able to include raised platforms (speed bumps) at this time, we will monitor speeds through Parua Bay village after the safety improvements have been installed.

Our contractors will work with businesses and others affected by the works to advise on and manage disruption during construction.

We look forward to making these improvements at Parua Bay and seeing the benefits that these types of safety projects bring to the community.
