A map showing the area affected by the project, the Old Onerahi Road / Onerahi Road intersection and Clotworthy Crescent / Onerahi Road intersection.

This safety project aims to improve the cycling connection to the Onerahi Shared Path and provides for general safety improvements at two road intersections in Onerahi to comply with current best practice and design standards.

The two intersections are the Old Onerahi Road / Onerahi Road intersection and Clotworthy Crescent / Onerahi Road intersection.

It comes after a severe cycle accident in 2022 and a Coroner's report providing a series of safety requirements to reduce the risk of reoccurrence.

These works include:

  • new signage and road markings to better delineate cycle lanes and connections to the shared path
  • some new and renewed footpaths with new tactile ground-surface indicators for visually impaired pedestrians, to meet New Zealand standards and improved pedestrian crossing points
  • renewed kerb and channel and improved drainage
  • vegetation removal to allow suitable and complying sight-distance requirements from road intersections and crossing points
  • the removal of unnecessary islands allowing clear and undistracted sight lines for road users to navigate through the side road safely and without ambiguity.

Throughout the works, there will be some disruption to our customers, which our contractor (when chosen) will manage.

Old Onerahi Road may need to be closed at times to allow ample room for the contractor to complete the works safely and quickly, and to limit the overall disruption to the community.
