Roof replacement of Old Library
- Project typeImprovement work
- Project value$960,000
- Project scheduleJuly - November 2023
- Contractor nameNPM Construction
The Old Library roof is leaking and is due for replacement. The design of the replacement roof meets the Historic building and Building Consent exemption requirements. Once the works are complete there will be little visible difference in the roof.
The project will cost $960,000. The construction and scaffolding setup started in July 2023 and will finish in November 2023.
The roof construction contract was won by NPM Construction and design is by designgroup h + k architects.
Project updates from end July 2023
The scaffolding setup requires an engineered design so the entire building can be shrink wrapped before roof removal.
Shrink wrapping is covering the building with a tent to protect the building undercover in a dry environment.
The scaffolding setup and shrink wrapping is weather dependant work so the current challenge is getting this large structure in place so the roof works can commence.

Disruption to surrounding businesses and public
The Old Library building will remain open throughout the works to the existing tenants, and we are working together to manage their safety during the works.
There will be fences surrounding the building to keep the public outside the construction zone. Also, the building will be scaffolded and have a waterproofing tent covering the exposed roof area.
Walkway through to the public library and civic centre will remain open throughout the works.
There will be some noise and at times the exit of the Forum North carpark may have stop and go signs in place.
There will also be trimming of the rimu trees to make room for the scaffolding.
